Tavern Shenanigans by RoninDude Tavern Shenanigans by RoninDude
Commission for :iconscyth118:

This is a scene starring my OC, Lin the elf, as a barmaid in a medieval style tavern. Apparently, the Samurai next to her was offended by something off camera, and due to him brandishing his weapon in such close quarters, it appears that poor Lin's cute barmaid outfit has been slashed to ribbons. Not sure if the rest of the gathering is amused or shocked at the sudden flashing.... well... except for that old fellow on the stool... His expression should give a good idea how he feels on the matter.

This was so challenging, and very fun! I may go in and tweak the lighting later, depending on how I feel after I take a break from it. Sometimes its best to just walk away for a few hours and come back. My reaction to the image after seeing it again usually tells me what is right and what needs fixed. So, I'll post it here and go do something else, and in the meantime, thanks for checking it out!

Here is a little funny sketch in the same series:

Don't forget to stop by and see my facebook and youtube channels! I tend to upload progress shots and vids of my work there.

Oh snap! Don't mess with the Barmaid. Her vengeance will be swift and terrible. Fantastic art!

Thank you!
I made it the same way I make anything:
1. Loose sketch,
2. More detailed sketch on top,
3. Inked the important lines,
4. Added base flat colors under lines,
5.Add shading,
6. Refine.

Wow, sounds like it took some work. I guess that's how it works though. I need to be more willing to invest the proper time into backgrounds. Do you use any special brushes for shading/textures?

Thanks for the info

No problem, any time! :)
I think I grabbed some textures for the wood grain and the tapestries (set to overlay over my painting), and I only really use the round brush. I work in paint tool sai, and I haven't figured out how to have custom brush shapes like in Photoshop, so I just learned to use the round brush. Currently, though, I don't use textures, like I did when I drew this. I just paint everything in. It looks better, and more natural, that way (in my opinion).

Okay, I see. I use Photoshop and use round brush 90% of the time. I've experimented with textures, but with my more cartoony style its hard to make it work. Its good to use contrasting styles/aesthetics in the background to make the characters "pop", but its still a matter of balance.
