Nice work finalizing it! Really cool to see how little the lines changed from the original sketch - how all the foundations were solid, it was just waiting for some spiffy colors.

"Everything seems beautiful! You are suddenly quite happy you paid that seedy looking dwarf twice the going rate for that perfect-picnic-spot scouting info!"

Lol I am just starting out as a DM, actually. Got a campaign planned and written out, and the players are gathering at my place to roll stats, get introduced to the world and perhaps start playing on Tuesday. I am both nervous and excited. XD
Any tips for keeping things rolling smoothly? I feel as if I am pretty prepared with content. :D

Lol....stung again...Hey ABootttttt

Starting out? Best of luck man...GM'ing was a blast :D

Well..If your players are also starting out that is best

Have a list of names even for NPC's that you don't think will need them...because some player will always ask background guy number 2  - "hey buddy, what is your name?"

Have a second small scenario in mind, in case the first one ends quickly, or goes badly wrong.

Never make the mistake of getting into that versus frame of mind. The GM can always kill the players, that is not what it is all about.
I have been a player in a game where the gm told another player "To make this a fair fight, I am increasing my guys stats by 10/100 across the board" This is bad...and that group fell apart pretty soon after that.

Never ever kill your players JUST on a dice roll. Bad decisions should kill PC's, not a random dice roll unless your group are into that. Most of my grps and scenarios were 66% story driven, 33% some form of action.

No perception rolls, powers or abilities to tell if people are lying, good, evil etc. I hate those kinds of spells. I introduced the concept of a Paradox War due to overuse of Divination magics so the Powers banned their followers from using most of it.

Know your scenario inside out,  then be prepared to chuck it all and go on the fly - improvisation is the key skill to keep a session flowing and responding to unexpected player actions. Nothing hacks off a grp more than feeling as if they are on a "rail" they can't deviate from.

Like your art, add layers...start with minor conflicts and more than one. %-10 different minor possible antagonistic grps or people in an area is good, scaling down the numbers as the team get closer to the heart of each campaign.

Hang each NPC portrayal on something different, a voice, a way of speaking, an attitude...it helps differentiate them in the players minds

Those are my general tips, assuming you are playing a fantasy type game with a bunch of relatively inexperienced players

Great advice! I already am following a lot of these (I watched Matt Mercer's GM tips a lot lol) and I will definitely keep them in mind, going forward!

I appreciate the thorough response very much!

1. I have a list of names. Check!

2. I have some random encounters to keep the players busy if they stray off track or don't take my plot hooks, at least until the session is over, so I can regroup my overarching story.

3. Yeah, I am not into the versus mindset at all. I want to create a world and let them play in it. But I also want to establish that there is real risk, so they will have to be careful.

4. My players are actually experienced (I am an experienced player too, to a degree), and they like the risk of the dice. So I am preparing my mind to make sure that if the dice spell death, that I can at least make it as grand a death as possible.

5. One rule I am establishing is that all players must be good. it's a good campaign, so no evil characters. I don't want players stealing from other players and then everyone having to pretend they don't know. I'll consider the perception rolls on lies. I kinda like that idea... Because it allows a character to be more perceptive than the player, which is valid in my eyes. John might not be a great warrior, but his fighter, Smarg the half orc is! I don't see why we can't do that with mental skills, too, to a degree. Definitely needs some testing! I'll keep your tip in mind.

6. This is something I have been obsessing on, in my spare time. Knowing my scenario, world, political situations, and all that, so that I can be as clever as possible when the players toss all my plans out the window. I am purposely over-preparing for the first few sessions, in hopes that I will have enough content to let me spend my time paying attention to how my players play, so I can prepare more efficiently in the future. I definitely want to avoid the feeling of being on a rail.

7. This is good advice! I definitely have layers. trying to think of the world and plot like a tree, rather than a post. There's lots of little aspects of the world, so players can pursue and evolve whatever part of it they focus on.

8. Good advice also! I am not a great actor, so NPCs are my biggest stress point.... So what I have done is write down backgrounds, hopes and fears, and traits of each npc. I have a list of randoms that I can pull from, too, if need be.

thanks again for all the advice! Very helpful, indeed!

Np...my main point on number 6 was the Iago dilemma

You spend days building a nefarious npc whose goal is to appear as a friend and lead the players astray. You will have plenty of subtle clues to alert the players of the danger but if they don't spot it..they are in trouble.

Would you rather the discovery of Iago's nature came through play...maybe the players get captured and have to stage an epic escape and then plan their revenge..

Or John gets a lucky perception roll on night 1 and the cat is running out of the bag and over the horizon? :)

hey, great point! That's a really solid point, actually... Thanks for clarifying! I am going to have to consider some things... Perhaps make the DC so ridiculously high only players with higher levels may spot it? XD
Of course, there is the random crit roll... Anyways, I will be considering this, for sure!

Well, it takes forever to chop them to pieces, and they're fighting back the whole time. Smashing bones - like the arms and legs - is a good way to immobilize them, and then you can take your time pulverizing them.
